Melgaço Continental Series – First UCI Points and Mixed Feelings

One year after hosting the European Championships, Melgaço welcomed the opening round of the European Cup this season. This competition is one of the most important on the calendar, just below the World Series, and plays a key role in the race for wildcard spots to access higher-level events — a crucial objective for our team. I travelled to Portugal together with my teammates Riki, Léo and Sivert.

Following two encouraging weeks in Spain, I arrived in Portugal with strong motivation. Realistically, given the level of the race, my ambitions had to remain measured. However, the start list offered a real opportunity to aim for my first UCI points of the season, meaning a top 15 finish.

The first laps were promising, and the level of competition confirmed that a top 15 — and even a top 10 — was within reach. After two laps, I felt good on the bike and in control, with a strong position in the race.

However, as the race progressed, the accumulated fatigue from the training camp and the previous races began to take its toll. The legs felt less fresh than in the previous weeks. Despite this, I managed to stay close to the top 10 and maintained a solid pace, hoping to regain strength towards the end of the race — something I am usually able to do. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case this time.

Towards the end, I also had to deal with a pedal issue (loose cleat causing instability), forcing me to ride more cautiously in the final part of the race. I eventually crossed the line in 13th position.

On paper, it’s a strong result and my first UCI points of the season. However, I know there was potential for a much better outcome, which leaves a slightly mixed feeling.

This race also confirmed the team’s strong collective performance. In the U23 category, Sivert Ekroll finished 2nd and Léo Lounela 3rd, both stepping onto the podium. In the elite category, Riki Kitabayashi secured 23rd place.

This race concludes the Iberian block of my early season. It’s now time to return to Belgium for a solid training block ahead of the second round of the European Cup in Obergessertshausen at the end of March.
